Why go

The consistency is unmatched; with both beach breaks and reef-influenced waves, you can almost always find a rideable peak. Praia do Amado is a surf sanctuary with a consistent swell, while Praia da Bordeira offers massive, sprawling sandbanks that can produce world-class conditions when the swell and wind align.

Why you might skip it

Skip these breaks if you are a absolute beginner looking for mild, glassy longboard waves during a heavy northwest swell, as the Atlantic power here can be punishing and the rip currents are often severe.

What to do

Surfers should assess conditions at both Bordeira and Amado before paddling out, as the sandbanks shift constantly. Non-surfers should traverse the wooden walkways at Bordeira for incredible views of the dunes and the river mouth.

History & origin

Located within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, this area has long been a remote fishing outpost. Its identity shifted in the late 20th century as surfers discovered the exposure to consistent Atlantic swells, turning the area into a focal point for sustainable surf tourism in Portugal.

Getting there & around

Accessible via local roads signposted from the N268. Large parking areas are available at both main beaches, though they can fill up quickly in mid-summer.

The areas are best navigated by foot; the wooden boardwalks provide protected access to the sand while preserving the fragile dune systems.

Common planning mistakes

Ignoring the rip currents is the most dangerous error; the Atlantic currents here are extremely powerful and move quickly. Another mistake is failing to check both beaches, as a slight variation in swell direction can make one break significantly better than the other.

Less ideal for

Sunbathers seeking calm, tropical-style waters or families with small children during high surf.

Practical notes

Wetsuits are essential year-round due to cold Atlantic water temperatures. Always observe the local 'surf etiquette' and check for daily flag warnings regarding water safety.
