Trilho dos Sete Vales Suspensos
The Trilho dos Sete Vales Suspensos is a spectacular cliff-top hiking trail that traces the rugged coastline between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes. It offers unrivaled views of limestone arches, sinkholes, and the turquoise Atlantic waters that define the Algarve's iconic southern fringe.
The quintessential Algarve cliff walk, offering the most dramatic coastal scenery in the region.

Why go
It is an immersion into the geology of the Algarve, leading hikers past the famous Benagil sea cave, natural rock bridges, and sheer cliffs that drop into deep blue water. The trail is well-marked and provides access to secluded beaches that are otherwise inaccessible by road.
Why you might skip it
Those uncomfortable with heights or uneven, rocky terrain should avoid the path. It also becomes incredibly crowded and sweltering during the peak summer months, lacking shade throughout the entire journey.
What to do
The trail spans approximately 6 kilometers one-way, classified as moderate difficulty. The terrain is largely unpaved, featuring gravel, loose limestone, and significant undulating elevation changes as you traverse the seven valleys that give the trail its name.
History & origin
The trail is named for the seven 'hanging valleys' formed by ancient stream beds that now terminate high above the shoreline due to millennia of coastal erosion. The region is protected for its unique karst geology, where the porous limestone cliffs are continuously reshaped by the Atlantic.
Getting there & around
Trailheads are located at Praia da Marinha or Praia de Vale Centeanes, both accessible by road with parking available at each end.
The route is linear and well-marked with orange and yellow trail blazes; it is easy to follow without a guide.
Common planning mistakes
Many hikers underestimate the lack of water and shade, failing to bring enough hydration for a 12-kilometer round trip in the heat. Others assume the path is flat and underestimate the physical exertion required for the constant incline and decline.
Less ideal for
Families with small children in strollers, people with limited mobility, or those seeking a relaxing, shaded forest walk.
Practical notes
Sturdy hiking shoes are mandatory due to loose rocks and uneven surfaces. Wear sun protection and carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person, as there are no facilities along the trail itself.
