Camarão Frito
Whole small prawns fried with garlic and lime — the Algarve's simplest, best bar snack.
The quintessential Algarve bar snack that proves complexity is the enemy of excellence. It is sharp, salty, and utterly addictive.
It captures the raw, vibrant soul of the Algarve coast in a single serving.

Where it comes from
This preparation stems from the local fishing culture where smaller, less commercial prawns were discarded or consumed by the fishermen themselves. Through the decades, these modest crustaceans were elevated in taverns by adding generous amounts of garlic and local citrus. It eventually migrated from the dockside shacks to become a staple of every reputable coastal petiscaria.
The dish
Small prawns are sautéed until the shells turn crispy and the garlic caramelizes into the oil. Devouring these requires using fingers to peel away the shell, licking the garlic-lime essence directly from the meat.

When to eat it
It is best consumed in the heat of a summer afternoon alongside a very cold glass of local lager.
Why you might skip it
Those expecting a refined, white-tablecloth experience may find the messy, hands-on consumption of small crustaceans off-putting.
