Gruta das Torres
Gruta das Torres is a major basaltic lava tube on Pico Island, in the Azores—not in Alentejo or the municipality of Portalegre. The cave is Portugal’s longest known lava tube and can be entered only on a guided visit along a managed section of its underground passage.
A standout Pico experience for anyone interested in volcanic geology, but the supplied location is incorrect.

Why go
This is one of the Azores’ clearest encounters with the island’s volcanic anatomy: a dark, cool lava tunnel with uneven basalt flooring, low sections and preserved lava formations. The guided format adds useful geological interpretation and keeps visitors within a safely managed part of the cave.
Why you might skip it
Skip it if confined underground spaces, darkness, damp footing or stooping are uncomfortable. It can also disappoint visitors expecting a conventional tourist cave with illuminated walkways, dramatic stalactites or unrestricted exploration.
What to do
Join the official guided visit rather than attempting independent entry. Expect a controlled underground route through basaltic lava, with uneven ground, dark passages, occasional low ceilings and a cool, humid cave environment. Allow extra time at the visitor centre for orientation and safety instructions.
History & origin
Gruta das Torres is a lava tube formed when the outer surface of a basaltic lava flow cooled and hardened while molten lava continued to drain beneath it. At approximately 5 kilometres in mapped length, it is recognised as the longest known lava tube in Portugal. A managed section is protected and opened for guided visits as part of Pico’s volcanic heritage.
Getting there & around
The cave is on Pico Island, near Criação Velha in the municipality of Madalena, not near Portalegre. Access is by local road to the Gruta das Torres visitor centre, with parking nearby; follow the official booking information for current arrival instructions.
At the site, follow staff directions and remain with the guide. The cave is not a conventional walking trail: surfaces are irregular, visibility is limited and some sections require careful footing or stooping.
Common planning mistakes
The most serious planning mistake is searching for this attraction in Alentejo: the correct destination is Pico in the Azores. Other common errors include arriving without a confirmed tour, wearing smooth-soled shoes, assuming the entire cave is open to visitors, and underestimating how uncomfortable the uneven, enclosed terrain can be.
Less ideal for
People with significant mobility limitations, claustrophobia, poor balance, or unsuitable footwear; it is also a poor match for anyone actually seeking an attraction in mainland Alentejo.
Practical notes
Wear sturdy closed footwear with good grip and clothing that can tolerate damp, dusty conditions. Bring only essential items, protect cameras from knocks and moisture, and follow all guide instructions. Check current opening hours, tour language, age or mobility restrictions and weather-related notices before travelling.
