Miradouro da Vista do Rei (Sete Cidades)
Perched on the crater rim of Sete Cidades, this iconic viewpoint offers the quintessential panoramic look at the twin emerald and azure volcanic lakes. It is the most famous vantage point in the Azores for capturing the dramatic scale of the Caldeira.
The essential Sete Cidades experience, provided the clouds decide to cooperate.

Why go
The vista provides an unparalleled perspective of the Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, separated by a narrow stone bridge. On a clear day, the contrast between the lush volcanic caldera walls and the vibrant hues of the water is arguably the most recognizable image of the archipelago.
Why you might skip it
Skip this viewpoint if the mountain is shrouded in thick fog, which happens frequently; if the webcam shows total cloud cover, you will see nothing but white mist. Those seeking solitude should also be wary, as it is the most crowded spot in the region.
What to do
Observe the twin lakes from the designated concrete platform. It serves as a starting point for hiking the rim trail (the PR3 SMI - Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades route), which is a 7.7 km descent into the village offering evolving perspectives of the crater.
History & origin
Named for the visit of King Carlos I of Portugal in 1901, the site overlooks the Sete Cidades volcanic complex, a massive collapsed caldera that formed the island's most iconic geological feature over hundreds of thousands of years.
Getting there & around
Located along the EN9-1A road, accessible by car from Ponta Delgada via Covoada. There is a marked pull-off area and parking adjacent to the ruins of the Hotel Monte Palace.
The area is small and contained entirely around the roadside parking and the viewing platform.
Common planning mistakes
The most common error is failing to check the official Azores webcams before driving up; spending 45 minutes driving only to stare into a white void is a frequent frustration for ill-prepared tourists.
Less ideal for
Those seeking remote, quiet wilderness or travelers with an extreme aversion to tour buses and crowds.
Practical notes
Bring a windbreaker even in summer as the rim is exposed and breezy. Always have a backup plan, such as the nearby Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, if visibility at Vista do Rei is poor.
