Furna do Enxofre
Furna do Enxofre is a stunning, cathedral-like volcanic lava tube located within the caldera of Graciosa island. It remains one of the Azores' most impressive geological monuments, characterized by its massive vaulted ceiling and an subterranean sulfurous lake.
An essential, otherworldly experience that stands as the crown jewel of Graciosa's geological attractions.

Why go
Descending the stone staircase into the depths of this lava tube provides a rare opportunity to stand inside a volcanic chimney. The sheer scale of the vaulted roof, combined with the eerie light filtering from the natural opening above, creates an atmosphere of immense geological grandeur found nowhere else in the archipelago.
Why you might skip it
Travelers with mobility issues, claustrophobia, or extreme fear of heights may struggle with the long, steep descent and the damp, enclosed conditions of the cave floor.
What to do
Descend the iconic 183-step spiral staircase housed inside the masonry tower to enter the main chamber. Once inside, follow the walkway to observe the sulfurous lagoon and the unique geological formations along the cave walls.
History & origin
Formed by the drainage of lava during the volcanic evolution of the Graciosa caldera, the cave has been studied by geologists since the 19th century. It is a protected monument, noted for its unique microclimate and the sulfurous gases that historically gave it its name.
Getting there & around
The site is located inside the Caldeira da Graciosa; follow signs from Santa Cruz to the park entrance. There is a designated parking area near the visitor center.
The site is self-guided once inside the main chamber, but access is restricted to the established stone stairs and the designated walking perimeter.
Common planning mistakes
Assuming the cave is a quick stop without considering the physical exertion required for the long climb back up the spiral stairs.
Less ideal for
Visitors with limited mobility, small children, or those expecting a quick, effortless walk.
Practical notes
Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear as the ground can be damp and slippery. A light jacket is advisable due to cooler temperatures inside, and visitors should check the visitor center for current air quality reports if sensitive to sulfur.
